Vision :
Dams are considered one of the most important effective water facilities in the water sector. Iraqi dams are strategic importance projects as Iraq suffers from the shortage water resources and the scarcity of their recharge. This is because of the decrease and fluctuation of rainfall in recent years, and the increasing demand for water in light of the increased population and the developed economics in various fields.
Accordingly, there is an urgent need for the importance of good preparation and efforts to achieve the greatest water benefit. In addition, it is required to maintain the largest possible return from the rainy seasons in various parts of the country. Therefore, detection procedures and ensuring the readiness of dam infrastructure in cooperation with the concerned authorities are necessary to determine the safety and readiness of these vital national infrastructures.
Therefore, the idea of holding the conference came as a platform for exchanging practical experiences and practices among those who are interested in the field of dam safety. In addition, the latest studies, research and techniques used in this field will be shown. Other reason for holding this conference is to maintain communication with universities, local and international research centers with the aim of developing scientific and practical skills. Finally, establishing a national program for Iraqi dams safety are also to one of the main reason in order to enhance water security and actively contribute to the economic and agricultural development in Iraq.
Goals:
This conference aims to develop dam safety procedures within the framework of scientific research and methodologies that keep pace with development in the world. In addition, it aims to allow researchers and employees to exchange scientific views and benefit from experiences to increase knowledge and achieve the anticipated benefit in this field through:-
- Reviewing the latest findings of studies, research, and practical and applied experiences in the field of dam safety and its techniques locally and globally.
- Presenting the experiences and studies of international, regional and local organizations, universities, research centers as well as companies in the field of dam safety in Iraq.
- Exchange of scientific expertise with the academic sectors to contribute to the development of scientific curricula related to the dams safety in the undergraduate and postgraduate studies.
- Getting to know experts, specialists and researchers in the field of dam safety to discuss ideas and research aimed at improving and raising the efficiency of dams and reservoirs operation.
- Determining the legislative requirements for developing specialized scientific staff in the fields of dams and water resources, completing the infrastructure of instrumentation, equipment and necessary supplies in the dams safety management , and organizing integrated databases that will be the basis for a real renaissance in order to develop an efficient program to secure the dams safety.
Themes:
- Monitoring and inspection of dam safety, potential dam failures mode, emergency plan and response in accordance with international specifications and standards.
- Monitoring and inspection instrumentation and equipment, and the use of modern technology to ensure dams safety.
- Employing multi-criteria decision-making methodologies and models in the management of maintenance and dam safety, the optimal operation of dams to ward off flooding and the passage of flood wave in flood periods, and ensuring the required storage demands for dry periods.
- Hydrological and geotechnical studies and the use of geographic information systems and satellite images in operating dams for ensuring dam safety.
- Technical and legal requirements to ensure dams safety.

- Optional Field visit to the Mosul Dam structure will be on the second day for all attendees.
- The Conference will be held in a hybrid format and the zoom link will be provided soon.
- Accommodation is available at Mosul Dam site for those who are coming from outside the Mosul Governorate.
